What is
USMIS?
USMIS (Ultra Slick Multiple Image Solution) is an OSCommerce contribution that allows to show multiple
(unlimited) images per product in a really slick way. It also allows to show a description and a comment for each image and for each language defined in your OsCommerce site. The USMIS contribution calls some Linux commands, so it will only work in OsCommerce sites installed on Linux machines. We recommend you to see our live demo in http://www.serpeal.com/catalog . There you'll see all the power of this contribution.
USMIS provides:
-
automatic thumbnailing,
-
unlimited images per product,
-
a description (like a title) for
each image,
-
comments for each image (as long as
you want),
-
you can set a description and a
comment to each image for each language defined in your e-commerce
site,
-
you can allow or not to download images.
-
even more things (visit the live demo site)....
The USMIS contribution contains three
things:
-
the modifications to the standard
(non modified) OSCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 source code needed to run
USMIS in your OSCommerce installation;
-
a Flash-based image browser and
-
a graphical simple-to-use tool
(called JAlbum) to
set the appearance of the image browser, in order to make the image browser have
your site's appearance.

When you download the USMIS tarball
you're getting all the code and tools needed to make USMIS work,
and also you're getting the USMIS Image Browser.
This image browser has a video intro
that is shown each time the page is loaded. That video intro references to the USMIS project (it is a link to the USMIS project home site).
The image browser also has a tag in the
bottom right corner where you can read "The USMIS project". That
tag reloads the video intro.
We can modify the image browser to build other alternatives. Just contact us for more info/alternatives.
Next, you can see an example of the
USMIS Image Browser. This example shows images of fractals. You can
see a description in the left top side of the main photograph and a
comment just on the right side. The main photograph is not still
the original. You can download the original by pushing in the
little arrow in the right bottom side of the main photograph. As
you see, the image browser has been configured to have this site's
appearance (black background and white characters). You can modify
the width and height of the image browser, as well as the sizes of the
thumbnails and the photographs linking to the originals. To learn
how to do that, visit the link Configuring the USMIS Appearance. If you
haven't seen the video intro, please push here and then reload the page in your
browser.
The image browser has much more functionality that the one shown here. Visit the live demo site to see all its power.

The php code part of the USMIS contribution contains some commands that can only be run on Linux, so USMIS will only work on OsCommerce sites installed on Linux.
In order to run USMIS, you'll have to have installed (at least) the Java Runtime Environment. Type "java -version" in a console and if it returns something (not an error) then USMIS should work.
If you have installed java but "java -version" returns an error, then you must export the PATH to the java bin directory (example: "export PATH=$PATH:/home/serpeal/jdk1.4/jre/bin/"). You must add the export command line in your bash profile so each time the machine is rebooted the PATH is updated.
